Honey
HONEY is one of the oldest cosmetic products ever. It is a thick, sweet-tasting liquid produced by worker bees from nectar obtained from plant flowers. It serves as food for bee colonies in times of food shortage (autumn and winter months). It consists of the sugars fructose (up to 44%), glucose (up to 41%), sucrose, maltose and other sugars in a smaller percentage and water (up to 23%). The ratio of sugars to water varies according to the type of honey. We distinguish between forest and meadow or flower honeys, but others are also known.
E.g. lavender or acacia honey are typical for France, in Greece we can find honey made from Thyme or orange flowers and in New Zealand manuka honey. Each of these honeys has slightly different medicinal and cosmetic properties as well as the content of active substances.
Honey generally contains a wide range of enzymes, vitamins and minerals (phosphorus, potassium, calcium, selenium, zinc, iron, manganese, copper) and water. Thanks to the presence of pinocembrin (an antioxidant), it improves the activity of the central nervous system and the brain. Honey crystallizes within a few months after harvesting, it is a natural process that does not change its properties, so there is no need to worry about it.
