Ylang Ylang

Kananga fragrant is a tropical tree growing to a height of 20m. It is most commonly found in Sumatra, Java and the Philippines, but also in SE Asia and Australia (Polynesia, Indonesia, Melanesia, Madagascar and the Comoro Islands).

Kananga fragrant has yellow, pink to light purple flowers. In cosmetics, it is mainly drawn from two species of the tree Cananga odorata var. genuina (scented cananga) and Cananga odorata var. macrophylla.

Ylang-Ylang essential oil is produced by steam distillation from the green-yellow flowers of Cananga odorata (var. genuina),

from Cananga odorata (var. macrophylla) kananga essential oil.

There is also Absolue ylang-ylang essential oil, which is extracted using a solvent (e.g. alcohol) and is of higher quality (also more expensive) than essential oil obtained by steam distillation.

The main components of ylang-ylang essential oil are benzyl acetate, benzyl benzoate, linalool, caryophyllene, geranyl acetate, methyl benzoate and components known as sesquiterpenes.

Both ylang-ylang essential oil and kanga essential oil can cause an allergic reaction to the skin in undiluted form, should not be taken internally, and should not be used by people with low blood pressure.

In large quantities, they can cause vomiting and headaches.

The name ylang-ylang comes from the Tagalog word ilang - wild, and is also sometimes said to derive the word ilang-ilan, meaning rare.

How does it smell? The smell of ylang-ylang is heavy, intense, sweet and floral, in Indonesia ylang-ylang flowers are given to newlyweds in bed for their strongly aromatic and mainly aphrodisiac effects. In perfumes, ylang-ylang brings this heady, sensual, bold sweet floral scent. This makes it a highly sought after ingredient in luxury floral perfumes, such as the very famous "Chanel No.5" perfume. It blends very well with musk, bergamot, patchouli, nutmeg or grapefruit.
