What is vetiver and how do perfumes with vetiver smell?

Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) – Goldenbeard. The secret of the scent of vetiver comes from the thousand-year tradition and popularity of vetiver throughout the Eastern Orient. Vetiver essential oil is also known as khuss oil. It is obtained from the vetiver plant, which is a tufted green grass native to Haiti, India, Java and Réunion. Vetiver oil is strongly aromatic.

Description: Vetiver grows to a height of more than 2 meters. In the cells of the bark of the roots, the essential oil known as vetiver is produced by bacteria and has been used in perfumery and medicine since ancient times. The name Vetiver comes from the Tamil vetiver (cut root). An apt name typical of the method of collecting its roots. The oil is one of the ingredients of many perfumes, including the famous Chanel No. 5.

How is the scent of vetiver obtained? Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) was originally cultivated as a protection against soil erosion in India, from where it was exported to other tropical regions, mainly Haiti, Java, Madagascar and Réunion. The aromatic fullness of the roots develops between the first and second year after planting. The long hairy roots are cut off from the rest of the plant, which is then replanted for the next harvest. Fragrance oil is obtained by lengthy distillation of sun-dried vetiver roots from water or steam. Thanks to this, the resulting essential oil acquires a yellow to brown colour smelling of wood, grapefruit, smoke and earth, while the ratio of tones depends on the geographical origin of the raw material and the specific distillation process.

What does vetiver smell like? Vetiver oil is strongly aromatic - it is characterized by undertones of chocolate with a distinct deep, spirited woody and earthy scent, which you can recognize, for example, in high-quality men's cologne. Vetiver originating from Haiti is additionally complemented by fruity undertones of sweet grapefruit. However, vetiver stands out differently on everyone, according to the unique personality of each wearer. But for everyone, the smell of vetiver is a great refreshment on hot summer days.
