Raspberry

The common raspberry (Rubus idaeus) is a native species of the higher regions of Europe and Asia, growing at the edges of the forest and wherever the soil is more acidic. In Scandinavia, it is still found wild around the 70th parallel and it is also traditionally cultivated here.

Raspberry is a delicious berry-like fruit. The fruits are up to 2.5 cm in size, pointed, red, yellow, black. They have a high content of vitamin C, riboflavin and niacin. They are climbing, deciduous, self-pollinating shrubs.

History: Seeds and parts of plants were found in the remains of prehistoric lake settlements in the territory of today's Switzerland. Classical authors, however, do not mention the raspberry, as well as other plants of more northern regions. Since the Romans were known gourmets, it is strange that they would not eat these delicious fruits while conquering more northern, colder and wetter lands. Perhaps they did not mention them precisely because the gathering of wild fruits was quite common.

Aroma: They have a sweet fruity scent with an undertone of rose, which is why they are often sought after as an item in the cosmetics and perfume industry. Their lifespan is short.
