Precious woods

The most expensive wood in the world: it costs millions and is rotten...

Would anyone want to pay for wood that is demonstrably rotten and infested with mold?

You will be surprised. This is precisely how Thai stands of Aquilaria crassna gain value. But it is a rather complicated matter. First, the tree must successfully survive thirty years of life before it grows to the proper size. And then he might be noticed by a parasitic fungus that penetrates inside his trunk. Which doesn't happen very often. As a defence against this infection, the tree then begins to secrete an aromatic resinous substance into its volume, which gradually causes the wood core to darken.

Wood more expensive than ivory. And this whole invisible fight against the infection must go on undisturbed for the next decades, until the tree becomes the so-called agar, eagle wood, or Oud.

The only way to find out if the wood is already sufficiently processed by infection and biological defences is to cut down the entire tree. Which also means interrupting and invalidating the whole process if you do it too soon. All this because of the profit of essential oils, which, with a price of 100,000 dollars per kilogram, make agarwood the most expensive in the world.

Imbula - this wood, which grows mainly in South America, is used both for the production of furniture and also for the production of plywood and veneer. The colour range is from yellow-brown to olive, depending on whether it is sapwood or heartwood. Iroko - this wood from West Africa is used to make furniture and possibly veneers as a substitute for teak because it is water resistant. The wood is greasy and therefore durable. Olive tree - is a typical tree of Southern Europe and its hard wood is green-yellow in colour. It is used to make furniture and veneer.

Teak - found in South Asia, most often in Thailand, India and Burma. It is a durable wood, which, thanks to the large proportion of oil, is very resistant to water, making it one of the best and highest quality woods in the world. It gets dark quickly in the air. It is used for the production of not only garden furniture.

Wenge - this very hard wood comes from tropical Africa. The heartwood is brown in colour with black veining, but quickly darkens to an almost black colour in air. It is used to make luxury furniture. Australian Rare Woods-Australian Exotic Woods Unlike similar rare woods from tropical regions, Australian woods are harvested in a strictly controlled manner exclusively by federally licensed timber merchants.

Burls growing on 100-year-old trees are carefully removed in a way that truly revitalizes the living tree. Their exceptional structure predestines them primarily for the turning production of bowls and cans. They can also be used in the production of knife handles or decorative items (jewellery).
